It's Not Enough To Say His Name
Seidman for Mayor Campaign Update
Fourteenth update to my mailing list about the progress and goals for my campaign.
Dear Neighbor,
This past Tuesday marked one year since George Floyd was murdered. Since then the pandemic raged, we booted one corrupt president for another, and international conflicts have abounded. What's shocking to me is that one year later the majority of what we have to show for all of the incredible BLM energy and tireless activism in 2020 is a series of state-wide bans on police chokeholds and no-knock warrants along with some toppled statues. Suffice it to say, this is not enough and has promised little for a more just and equitable future - a future with less incarceration, civil servants that look like the communities that they serve, and cities with more plain old opportunity. Saying George Floyd's name, along with everyone else who died unjustly at the hands of the police, reminds many of us of how black and brown people are treated by the police in ways that are so different from what most white people would ever have to endure. With that being said, saying his name is requisite but not sufficient and until we decentralize power I sadly do not expect much of anything to change. I welcome all thoughts and analysis on the above as per always.
My latest position paper WAKE UP! has a pitiful two views, both of whom are probably myself so help a brother out and consider clicking the link ^ if you'd please. I hope to catch as many of you as I can in Queens at Gantry Plaza State Park along the East River Sunday 10am-5pm (weather permitting), at the Satellite Art Club for a 7pm rally in Brooklyn Thursday night (06/03), or just around this great city so many of us call home.
In decentralized power,
Ira Seidman
